This course introduces students to the FabLab workspace, safety culture, expectations, and how tools and materials are accessed.
Completion of FabLab 101 is required before using any equipment in the lab.
The FabLab is a workspace where students design, prototype, and build projects using modern fabrication tools.
Students use the FabLab to:
• build engineering prototypes
• design mechanical systems
• fabricate project components
• experiment with new technologies
Design your project
Submit fabrication files
Files are reviewed for safety
Fabrication is scheduled
Parts are picked up and tested
Using PPE in the FabLab is a strict requirement.
Plan your work before using tools.
Never force equipment.
Clean tools and surfaces when finished.
Always ask before using unfamiliar equipment.
Wear PPE
Follow instructor directions
Use tools only after certification
Clean workspaces before leaving
Return tools to proper storage
Log materials used in the inventory system
For all materials and tools in the FabLab, we will utilize a semi-automated tracking system that monitors tool quality, and helps identify lack of consumable materials. For this system to remain accurate, it requires that EVERYONE logs when materials and tools are used.

In addition to the FabLab 101 training, before using most pieces of equipment in the FabLab, you will be required to complete a specialized tool training on that specific tool or set of tools. Each training will cover:

Machine Cleanup
All tool trainings will follow a common format:
Self-learning module with reading and videos about the tool.
Knowledge check assessment
1 on 1 skills demonstration and assessment with Mr. Lockwood
