Jonathan Lockwood

I am a STEM educator with over a decade of experience teaching physics, mathematics, and engineering design at both the secondary and collegiate levels. My work focuses on combining rigorous academic content with hands-on engineering and fabrication experiences to help students develop the skills needed for modern science and technology careers.

Currently, I serve as the Engineering Academy Lead Instructor at Cornerstone Charter Academy, where I developed a four-year engineering pathway and built a school makerspace used for engineering, physics, and fabrication courses. I also teach dual-credit physics and calculus while guiding students through engineering design projects using CAD, manufacturing tools, and project-based learning.

In addition to my work at the secondary level, I am an Adjunct Professor of Physics at Valencia College, where I teach courses including University Physics and College Physics. My courses emphasize conceptual understanding, real-world problem solving, and applied mathematics in physics.

My background includes curriculum development, technical training, and professional development for educators in emerging STEM fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and additive manufacturing.

Engineering & Fabrication Lab

A major focus of my work is the development of hands-on engineering environments where students learn through building, designing, and prototyping.

At Cornerstone Charter Academy I designed and built a school makerspace (FabLab) that supports:

3D printing and additive manufacturing
CNC Milling
CAD design and product development
Laser cutting and fabrication
Electronics and robotics
Engineering prototyping projects

Students in the engineering pathway use this lab to move from concept → digital design → physical prototype, gaining real experience with modern engineering tools.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe the best way to learn STEM is by doing real work that mirrors how scientists and engineers solve problems. My classrooms emphasize project-based learning, design thinking, and hands-on experimentation. Students are encouraged to ask questions, build prototypes, test ideas, and iterate on their designs.

By combining strong theoretical foundations with real engineering tools, students develop both the technical knowledge and problem-solving mindset needed for careers in science, engineering, and technology.
